H&F Car 150H&F 150 is one of four surviving trolleys. It was constructed in 1918 and purchased by the H&F Railway in 1923. Although it is privately owned, the H&FRHS has assisted the owners with minor upkeep and preservation efforts over the years.
The Hagerstown & Frederick Railway Historical Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the heritage and history of the electric railway system that served those and other communities for the first half of the 20th century.

The Hagerstown & Frederick Railway began as several smaller companies who were merged to form an 87 1/2 mile network of passenger and freight trolley service serving nearly two dozen communities and many industries and farms until the mid 1950s. We provide technical and historical information, presentations and educational materials about this system and its history to members and the public.

The trolley line provided a vital link for the area's farmers, merchants and students for nearly 60 years. As our region has grown, much of the history has been lost to apathy and development. Less than a dozen original structures and only 4 "trolley" cars are known to remain in restorable condition.

Programs & Displays

As part of our continuing mission to promote the history of the Hagerstown & Frederick Railway and locate new resources and memoirs to document, the H&FRHS takes part in several regional events throughout the year, setting up community-specific educational displays at festivals such as Frederick's In The Street and Hagerstown Railroad Heritage Days. We also have a small exhibit at the entrance of Hobbytown USA in Frederick, MD.

Our Society also provides presentations at the request of other historical societies and organizations. These presentations vary depending on the target audience and host.

.......Preserving Memories...

We are constantly seeking individuals who have memories or family stories regarding the local trolleys. If you have memories you would like for us to document, please write us at P.O. Box 1314, Frederick, MD 21702. We can meet you at your home or a location of your choice and will use multimedia recording to document your memories to preserve them for future generations. The Society also is interested in acquiring items related to the local trolley system, and the value of objects donated can be tax deductible.
